We
hope you had a pleasant 4th of July Holiday! As we begin
to prepare for a new school year, there is much activity as ARRA funds
begin to be released. Much of the funding is allocated toward
green jobs, as well as allied health professions. We wanted to
share several new reports related to these industries. Please
see below to access two new reports focused on Psychiatric Technicians
and Surgical Technologists.
We've
also recently released a statewide framework of green industries
and occupations. "Understanding The Green Economy in
California: A Community College Perspective" is now available
online. The webinar is also available in case you couldn't join
us for the live session. Finally, we'll be
releasing a regional scan focused on energy
efficiency over the next few weeks.
If
you have questions related to green industries, feel free to contact
Lisa. Please contact Audrey if you have questions regarding
health occupations. We hope this provides interesting
summer reading, and as always, invite your input and
ideas!
Warm regards,
Lisa

California's
community colleges will play a critical role in
training a green-collar workforce. This will
require a comprehensive understanding of the green industries and
green jobs to appropriately meet this challenge.
In
Understanding
the Green Economy-A Community College Perspective,
the COE approach to studying green industries and occupations is
mapped out, creating a foundation for further study. This
report defines green industries and green occupations, classifies
green clusters within traditional industries, and identifies
traditional occupations evolving into green jobs.

New Allied Health Scans Available!
Psychiatric
Technicians
With a projected growth in new and replacement jobs of 27% between
2008 and 2013, Psychiatric Technicians are one of the fastest growing
occupations in the health care industry in Los Angeles County. The
mental health sector is experiencing a shortage of qualified workers
in several occupations. Prop 63 funds are available for new training
programs and stipends to public mental health workers who return to
college.
Surgical
Technologists
Job openings for Surgical Technologists in Los Angeles
County will grow by 31% from 2008-2013, resulting in 757 new and
replacements jobs during that period. There are currently no
community college programs to prepare students to enter the field.

The
Centers of Excellence, in partnership with business and industry,
deliver regional workforce research customized for community college
decision making and resource development.
The
Los Angeles Region Centers of Excellence are one of ten statewide
initiatives funded by the California Community Colleges Chancellor's
Office to assist community colleges in responding to emerging
workforce needs. Through the collection of secondary research, GIS
analysis, and industry validation interviews, the COE compile industry
profiles with occupational trends, training and skill requirements,
and recommendations on how regional community colleges can respond.
These scan reports are disseminated via this monthly bulletin as well
as posted at the COE
website.
